How every piece gets built

The Balanced Research Protocol

A documented methodology is not a gimmick. It is the only honest answer to the question every reader should be asking: how do I know I can trust this?

Why this is published

All my life I have valued civil discourse. We may not agree, and that is fine — we come from different backgrounds, different experiences, different faiths. But I began to see something change. The camps grew more divided even as polls kept showing that most people, at their core, are center-left or center-right. Not extremes. Not enemies. Just people standing on ground they can no longer see clearly because the noise got too loud.

Every outlet claims to be fair. Almost none of them show their work. I decided that if The Plumb Line Post was going to ask for your trust, it had to earn it in public. The protocol exists so readers can trust the floor beneath the argument — regardless of where they land on it. Read it. Hold me to it.

The four rules

1
Present all sides first
Before any conclusion, lay out the strongest case each major position makes. No editorializing until all positions are fairly represented.
2
Steelman the opposing view
Whatever direction the evidence leans, construct the most credible, charitable version of the argument against it. Intelligent people exist on every side for real reasons.
3
Cite sources — every significant claim
For every significant claim, name the source so it can be independently verified. Conclusions are not presented as settled when sourcing is thin or one-sided.
4
Flag our own drift
If framing, word choice, or emphasis starts tilting the result, we name it. The reader decides what to do with that information.

Hard rule — applies symmetrically
The reporting-versus-opinion distinction applies identically across all three tiers. Facts come from reporting. Opinion content is labeled as such from any outlet — left, right, or center — and never presented as fact. A rule that only disciplines one side is not a rule.

Mutual accountability

→
You may challenge any piece
If you believe a piece violates this protocol — missing source tier, opinion presented as fact, a straw man where a steelman was required — say so. Use the Challenge a Piece link in the footer. Every challenge receives a response.
→
We may push back on presupposed conclusions
The Plumb Line Post reserves the right to challenge any question that appears to presuppose a conclusion. Accountability flows both directions.

This document is permanent

The Balanced Research Protocol does not change between pieces, does not vary by topic, and does not bend when the subject is uncomfortable. It is published here so that any reader, at any time, can measure any piece against it. If we fall short, challenge us. We will answer for it.
